Cultural Fabrication: Grasping an Essence with Surrogate Hands

July 30, 2009 | Jodie | About Us | Design | Events | News

On Saturday July 25, Walsh Bishop Design Principal Stephen Knowles presented a lecture at Taliesin - The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Spring Green, Wisconsin.  Entitled “Cultural Fabrication:  Grasping an Essence with Surrogate Hands”, the lecture was part of the 2009 Summer Taliesin Lecture Series that also features Kostas Terzidis and Michael P. Johnson.

Stephen’s presentation came out of an architectural journey that started with a desire to build edifices, from concepts, for cultures to grow in and around.  Recognizing that the architect can only design around the materials he or she can utilize, the mind-hand-tool process of drawings, modeling, calculations and prototypes is an opportunity to experiment with concepts, geometry, matter and execution.  The ultimate goal is to understand building culture by investigating, imagining and discussing the capacity of materials, assemblies and routines that diverge from contemporary building practices.

RAVE Awards Celebrate Residential Design

June 25, 2009 | Jodie | Business | Commentary | Design | Events | News

Walsh Bishop Design Principal Ed Wilms will lead a tour of the Ivy Hotel and Residence as part of the 2009 Residential Architects Vision and Excellence (RAVE) Awards being held on June 25.  The RAVE Program was created by AIA Minnesota and Mpls-St. Paul Magazine to recognize excellence in residential design and raise awareness of the benefits of using an architect.  This year’s awards take place at the Ivy, for which Walsh Bishop was architect, and include a special presentation on historical preservation.  During the tour Ed will discuss our approach to this ambitious mixed-use development that incorporated an original 1930’s neo-Gothic building on a site of less than one-half acre.  The project was largely completed in 2008 and includes a hotel, restaurant, health club and spa and residential condominiums.

Walsh Bishop extends it’s congratulations to the honorees of this year’s RAVE Awards!
